CDC justification for new masking rules is total trash
Thank you Instapundit
The CDC's study says
In July 2021, following multiple large public events in a Barnstable County, Massachusetts, town, 469 COVID-19 cases were identified among Massachusetts residents who had traveled to the town during July 3–17; 346 (74%) occurred in fully vaccinated persons. Testing identified the Delta variant in 90% of specimens from 133 patients. Cycle threshold values were similar among specimens from patients who were fully vaccinated and those who were not.
So, let's lay some groundwork (thank you Twitchy):
- Town population less than 3,000
- County population about 220,000
- 40,000 people show up for "Bear Week", a week of gay celebration for people, many of who just spent the week before "Pride partying" in NYC
- One of the more popular bars "resembles a kind of dank dungeon where sweat drips from the ceiling and mold reaches up the walls"
- A large number of the people there are going for the sex. Note: gay men having sex do a fair amount of kissing, which is really helpful for viral transmission
- That being said, the total population there that week was nowhere near 85% male
- 469 cases of COVID-19
- Approximately three quarters (346; 74%) of cases occurred in fully vaccinated persons
- 90% of the cases were Delta
- 274 (79%) vaccinated patients with breakthrough infection were symptomatic.
- 5 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, 4 were fully vaccinated; no deaths were reported
- RT-PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values in specimens from 127 vaccinated persons with breakthrough cases were median = 22.77
- RT-PCR Ct values in specimens from 84 persons who were unvaccinated, not fully vaccinated, or whose vaccination status was unknown were 21.54
- Among the 469 cases in Massachusetts residents, 346 (74%) occurred in persons who were fully vaccinated; of these, 301 (87%) were male, with a median age of 42 years
- Viral load in fully vaccinated was less than 1/2 that of the rest (Each PCR round doubles the DNA)
- The vast majority of the cases were in gay men who were there to party hard
- This tells us nothing about normal Covid transmission
